The British Humanist Association (BHA) has today published six articles from prominent humanists on different sides of the European Union membership debate. The six articles in full are as follows:
- Joan Smith: ‘The humanist case for remaining in the EU‘
- Mary Honeyball: ‘Remain in the EU for peace, security, women, and our economy‘
- David Pollock: ‘The EU is an invaluable venture in pooling sovereignty in a shrinking world‘
- Matt Ridley: ‘Religious skeptics should be EU skeptics‘
- Crispin Blunt: ‘Reject Europe’s claims of a Christian identity, reject the EU‘
- Kelvin Hopkins: ‘Lead a more democratic Europe from outside the EU‘
Explaining the decision, BHA Director of Public Affairs and Policy Pavan Dhaliwal stated,
‘It wouldn’t be right for the BHA to take sides in this referendum, but it’s important that as humanists, we think long and hard, and self-critically, about our views and actions in all areas of our lives.
‘The referendum on Thursday will be historic, whatever the result. We hope that we can contribute towards an enlightened, democratic debate through these six articles by Joan Smith, Mary Honeyball, David Pollock, Crispin Blunt, Matt Ridley, and Kelvin Hopkins.’
